Doctor Corbin

I was under the weather at the beginning of this week.  But as a stay at home mom it’s not like I can call in sick and have a quiet restful time to recover.  I still am responsible for the care of a two year old.

My worst day was Monday and I was not feeling well and really dreading the day.  But to my surprise I actually had some of the best care in the form of my two year old!

I know, I wouldn’t associate a two year old with comfort and care, but that’s what happened.

Sweet Corbin sat by me on the couch and played quietly with puzzles and then every once in awhile he would come up to my face and just stroke it very gently.

He would ask me “is there anything you need?”  While that is super sweet and I appreciated that he thought of me I knew I could not count on any actual follow through.  I really wanted to say “yes, you can get me a bowl of chicken noodle soup, another glass of water, two aspirin, and a new box of Kleenexes,” but somehow I knew that was probably asking too much.

Corbin would also occasionally tell me “You’ll get better Mommy, don’t worry.”  I was so glad to have such a qualified health professional reassuring me that I would be fine;)

Overall, Corbin showed so much care and thoughtfulness while I was sick.  It made my heart happy to know that my two year old had the ability to show empathy.  I pray that always continues.

What Could Compare

It was beautiful weather so Corbin and I packed up and went to the park.

The park was empty.  Not a person there except ourselves…how exciting!

But the vast empty playground could not compare to a dirty little water puddle found on the sidewalk.  No, no, the swings, slides, ladders, and equipment had nothing on that dirty little water puddle.

He jumped in the dirty water.  He ran through the dirty water.  And he fell in the dirty water.

I cringed.  I kept my mouth shut.  And when I could bear it no longer, we left for home.

This is what he looked like on the ride home.

 WP_000386

Bare naked boy (except for his undies).  I had to strip the boy down of shoes, socks, jeans, and shirt because it was all soaking wet and covered in mud.

Yuck!  I’m not a boy and I don’t understand the appeal of being covered in water and mud, but apparently “it’s fun” says Corbin.

So I offered an opportunity for Corbin to play in an empty DRY park and he chose the wet dirty puddle instead.  Yup, he’s a boy and I’m a mom of a boy…my washer will attest to that!

Stick With It

Corbin has many qualities that we love.  But one in particular has always stood out to me.  He has tenacity and an ability to keep at an activity or goal he sets for himself despite what the odds look like.

I feel bad, but sometimes I flat out tell Corbin he should stop trying because it appears to me that what he wants to accomplish will not happen.  However, despite my warning to stop because the task is too difficult or next to impossible, he keeps at it and more often than not I’m proven wrong.  He accomplishes what I thought was not going to work.  How bad do I feel, but how proud I am that he keeps working and working at something.

A few days ago we were working with Play-Doh and he was determined to build a bridge.  I wasn’t really sure how this was going to be accomplished.  So I just sat back and Corbin went to work.  It took a while; it took many different design efforts and it took a lot of tenacity, but he never gave up and he built a bridge.  Granted it was not the sturdiest of bridges, but it was a bridge.

I am so very proud of not what he accomplished, but the amount of effort and work he put into succeeding.  I truly believe that some of the most successful people are not those who are the smartest or most gifted at something, but people who are willing to work the hardest and never give up.

I pray that Corbin will always work hard and have a fierce tenacity to never give up!

Pumpkin Patch

We traveled to a local pumpkin patch Sunday afternoon.  The temperature was perfect, the sky was bright blue, and the pumpkins were primed for picking!

Before we headed out to the patch a little train caught the eye of our little guy.

Then the big slide caught the eye of a bigger guy (aka Daddy:).  He and Corbin had a blast going down the big slide a few times.  Mommy, Grandma, and Grandpa decided to stay spectators for the event.

A big yellow school bus picture opportunity caught my eye.  Pictures please!

After feeding the goats, riding the barrel wagon, and going down a few other slides it was time for the main event…

…pumpkin picking!  Corbin declared going out into the patch and picking his own pumpkin was his favorite activity.  Although the ground was slightly muddy we had a great time hunting around for a nice pumpkin or two.

What a great time we had exploring the pumpkin patch and all of the activities it had to offer!

Sweetness Unwrapped

This morning at about 12:45 am Corbin woke up and was whimpering and calling out for us.  He started to develop a runny nose the other day, and waking at night is very unusual for him.  He sounded so congested I knew that he needed something.

So I went in and he just said “Mommy” and laid there while I stroked his head and he went back to sleep.  I guess he just needed a little comfort to go back to sleep because he wasn’t feeling well.

Later this morning Corbin came up to me and said “Mommy, I’m sorry I was crying.”  I asked “When were you crying?”  He said “last night, I’m sorry”.

Oh sweet baby, he was apologizing for crying out during the night when he was sick!  That was so sweet and of course I told him I didn’t mind and that we’d always be there when he needed us.

Even later that morning Chris informed me that after he got Corbin up he told Chris that “Mommy woke me up last night.”  Too funny!  No Corbin, you woke Mommy up, but that’s ok because you were just a little precious piece of sweetness in the morning:)

Wordless Wednesday

My legs as roads…my almost daily viewpoint.

Sidenote:  Does anyone else have a really nice camera, but instead of using that they pull out their phone and use that camera instead?  I’m so guilty of this.  We have a nice camera, but my phone is always around and handy.  That’s a new goal I have (like I need more!) I want to use our nice camera more often.

Mediterranean Pita

I thought I would share my new favorite lunchtime sandwich.  This is a super yummy treat for your taste buds!

WP_000376

The ingredients:

  • 4 inch whole wheat pita
  • 1/4 cup humus
  • 2 tomato slices
  • 2 oz. grilled chicken breast
  • 3 large black olives sliced

Stuff the pita with all the ingredients and enjoy!

I may be crazy but I generally have the same thing for breakfast every morning and only one or two different options that I choose from for lunch.  This just makes it easy for me and one less thing I have to plan.  Don’t worry, supper is a different meal everyday….just in case you were worried.

For those curious of the nutritional breakdown here it is:

  • 300 calories
  • 11 g fat
  • 1.5 g saturated fat
  • 27 g carbohydrate
  • 25 g protein
  • 6 g fiber

It’s That Time

When October rolls around that means Christmas music can begin to play in our house.  I LOVE Christmas music!

I know many say that it is way too early to start Christmas music but if you love it, is it really too early?  If I didn’t start playing Christmas music until after Thanksgiving I would only have ONE month to listen to those great songs, carols, and classics that make me smile.

Nope, I say if you love Christmas music now’s the time.  Listen to it and enjoy it.  I always feel my sprits lift when Silver Bells or White Christmas is playing in the background.

Anyone else listening to Christmas music yet or am I the only one?

(For the record Chris is mildly opposed to the early listening and Corbin has no opinion and seems to happily enjoy the Christmas music playing.  So I’m going to say that Corbin sides with me;)

Chit Chat

Corbin loves to talk and he often says some interesting, cute, and sometimes, funny things.  So here are just few moments from Corbin’s chit chat of late:

After opening the door to his room to get Corbin from his nap he said:  “Mom, you scared me!”

As I was doing a bunch of kisses on his head Corbin stated: “Stop kissing me mom”.  I said “Really?”  And he replied, “Just ONE kiss.”

I was tickling Corbin and using a funny voice and Corbin said “Mom, you’re being silly…maybe you should stop.”

Often when we ask a question about his needs he will reply with “I’m good.”  For example, Do you need some water? “I’m good.”  Do you need to go to the bathroom? “I’m good.”  Do you need a snack? “I’m good.”

We grilled last night, so the door was opening and shutting often. Unfortunately, we have now inherited a family of flies.  But don’t worry Corbin takes care of them.  “Shoo fly….shoo fly” is what I hear all day long.  Thanks Corbin!
