What the What Wednesday

Chris likes to get the mail.  It’s just his thing.  I could go days without checking, but he feels the need to check the mailbox daily.

So it was a rare occurrence that Corbin and I decided to walk down to our community mailbox and actually get the mail.  I grabbed my “special” set of keys (these are the keys that are rarely used and are not with my car keys) and we headed off.

When we got to the mailboxes I actually had to think very hard about what our box number was, but I thought I had it remembered so I reached for the mailbox key.  Umm, only one looked vaguely familiar so I tried it and it didn’t work.  Thinking I had the wrong box I tried the other adjacent boxes.  Nope.

I sat for probably about 5 minutes trying every key on my “special” ring.  I put every key in the box I thought was ours and the one below and above.  At times I was actually shaking the box because keys were getting stuck or I was physically trying that hard to get them to turn.

Well I finally gave up and we walked back home.  When Chris came home (with the mail) I asked him about my key.  I was then informed that he had moved the key from the “special” ring to my car ring.  What the what?  A whole extra key had been on my car ring for months and I didn’t even notice!

Apparently he moved it so that on the off chance he had my car keys he could still get the mail.  What the what!?!

Minute To Win It

Chris and I hosted a Minute to Win It party this weekend and I write this post because I want to encourage others to give it a try.  We adults had SO much fun!  The games certainly afforded some good laughs and healthy competition.

One of the games involved Vaseline on your nose as a way to carry cotton balls.  That provided some entertainment!

IMG_2056IMG_2057

Another game had competitors using a straw to suck up an M&M and then balance the M&M on another straw.  Oh my word that was 12 kinds of difficult!  (I only got ONE…ONE stinking M&M even stuck to my straw!)

IMG_2077IMG_2071

One favorite game was using a piece of spaghetti to pick up pieces of penne pasta (no hands allowed!).  Most people only got one or two, but Erika (pictured on the left) got 6!  She rocked that game.

IMG_2100IMG_2102

Rolling an Oreo down your face and stacking ding dongs on your forehead provided nothing but pure entertainment!

If you’re looking for some good laughs and fun times try a “Minute to Win It” party! Here’s a link to the how to videos from NBC: http://www.nbc.com/minute-to-win-it/how-to/

Rebuffed

It started off happy…

IMG_2021

then I went in for a kiss.  Notice the face, not happy:)

IMG_2027

“Momma, what are you doing?!? Daddy’s got the camera, I can’t have everyone seeing this.”

Finally the rebuff.  A big ‘ole hand in the face and a huge lean away.

IMG_2029

“Momma, stop you’re embarrassing me!”

And here was my reaction of shock and awe while Corbin has a look of indifference.  The teenage years are flashing before my eyes.

Cut It

We took the clippers to Corbin’s hair. (Well, not “we” as in Chris or I…”we” as in the hairdresser. Although Chris is working on me to just buy a pair of clippers and cut his and Corbin’s hair! What in the world?!?! I do NOT think so. This momma isn’t touching hair. It terrifies me that I could make a tragic mistake that would result in lopsided hair that is unfixable and must be buzzed, or worse, shaved to nothing! I will not hold that responsibility.)

So anyway…Corbin’s hair was looking mighty scruffy (note the picture below where his hair is literally blowing in the windy…not ok) so we took him into the salon. He had enough hair that they used the clippers and he sat super well. He even clapped for himself multiple times.

   Before                                  After

Now our little boy is looking all grown up with a nice groomed cut with the clippers.

As I end this post I just have this awful feeling I will be writing another one months down the road about the first haircut I gave Corbin and Chris with the clippers. In it I will be linking back to this post where I stated I will NEVER cut hair. Don’t you all see it coming? I’m strong, we’ll just see if Chris can wear me down. I hope not!

Fair Fun

I’m not a fan of the state fair.  There is little there that appeals to me and it’s usually SO hot.  But this year our church choir was asked to sing at a service on 9/11 at the fair.  So since Chris is in the choir we packed up and headed to the fair with Grandma and Grandpa as well.

IMG_1980

To my great surprise and delight I actually had fun!  I must say the fair is much more enjoyable with Corbin.

We went around and saw many of the animals including pigs, cows, sheep, and the very noisy chickens and ducks.

IMG_1963

Of course any moving or nonmoving vehicle got Corbin’s attention.  From trains to tractors, cars to mowers, trucks to trailers we stopped and looked at them all:)

But my favorite part of the day was an agricultural exhibit that had many hands-on activities for the kiddos.  We all enjoyed watching Corbin explore this area.

He put his hands in with some seeds, cotton, and corn to see what they felt like.

IMG_1976IMG_1978

Then it was off to milk a cow…mooo! (Grandpa was the real expert and showed us how it was done.)

IMG_1987IMG_1983IMG_2011

Finally, Corbin saddled up and went on a ride!

IMG_2000

So although I may not still be a huge fan of the fair I will definitely go again next year because Corbin made it so much fun!

Alphabet Soup

A new chef has appeared at our house to cook for us…can you believe the luck!

IMG_1952

He’s pretty cute, super nice, and seems to know his way around a kitchen.

IMG_1957

The only problem is he only knows how to cook one thing: alphabet soup.

IMG_1953

Oh well, I think we’ll keep him around anyway:)

Daddy’s Shoes

Corbin is already aspiring to be just like Daddy…well at least wear the same shoes as Daddy does. :)

Picnic and Play

We went on an old fashioned picnic this weekend with some friends.  I packed some food, we put on sunscreen, and headed out to a nearby park to have some fun.

Duck chasing was at the top of these boys’ “to do” list!  (Please note the impending puddle Corbin was about to run in to.  What would a picnic be without some water and mud? :)

A race to the top!

And finally a nice family photo to end the evening…

“J”

I’m formally introducing you all to my Ego, “J”.  She’s been with me for a very long time now and sometimes she’s helpful, but most of the time she just gets in my way.

Earlier this week, “J” was rearing her ugly head.

Corbin and I had to wait on an oil change, a new battery, and the tires being rotated on my car.  So, I knew this was going to be a wait, but I had prepared myself and my bag with activities.

We had just arrived in the waiting area when a boy (about 2 1/2 years old) and his dad came in.  Well, here goes “J”.  I was excited because I thought that perhaps this boy would be wild and crazy (he looked kind of ornery), and maybe he would take the spotlight off the actions of my child.

Nope. Not the case.

This little boy sat on a chair, adorably eating a chocolate chip cookie as my child took crayons that I had given him to color on a sheet and instead colored on a table and then a couch.  The old ladies were commenting on how nice this little boy was and how cute he was.  Don’t think “J” wasn’t just dying.  Oh, my ego was out of control and working overtime.  That cute and adorable, perfectly behaved boy was supposed to me be my child!

Well, as if I my ego had not suffered enough injustice Corbin got out his cars.  But instead of playing with them nicely he started to bang them on the table, drive them over the computers, and then…wait for it…dump them in a trash can…..what!!  While the sweet little boy eating a cookie looked on I had to put my hand in a trash can to retrieve the car.

I can only imagine what the other customers thought.  As my child stood by the window making incredibly loud car noises I started to focus on my inner thoughts.  I could not let “J”, my ego, take hold of my thoughts.  Corbin was not being horrible; he’s just not as “perfect” as that little boy.  I did not need anyone to tell me how wonderful Corbin is, I know that.  I also know most times Corbin is well behaved; he was just having an ornery day and testing my limits.  It happens…he’s 16 months old.

So as I sat in the waiting room, I breathed, I prayed, I got myself out of the grips of “J” and became ok with the fact that my child was not perfect.  I knew that I had handled everything he did in a manner that was acceptable, respectful, and will help him to make better decisions in the future. So while I can’t always control how my child acts I can ALWAYS control how I act.

We have had our ups and down, “J” and I.  But I’m starting to get control of her. :)
