A First Time for Everything

This weekend held a few firsts:

1) We participated in a family servant event.  Our church sponsors a neighboring school and we went there Saturday morning and worked on their playground, painted signs, planted some flowers and shrubs, and hung poster strips.

Chris, Corbin, and I were assigned to work outside on the playground to pick up trash and put sand onto their playground areas.  I’m not used to spending hours with a shovel and a rake and I was ready by the end of the morning to be doneSmile

Corbin did a super great job of helping out with his little shovel.  He is excited for the kids to see his work.  Corbin thinks they will really love it!

2) Then that afternoon we had another soccer game.  Corbin scored 3 goals!  Scoring that many was a first!  He loves playing soccer.  It is such a joy to watch your child do something they enjoy.

This is his official celebratory move after scoring.

3) And our final first this weekend….a LOOSE TOOTH!!!!  What the what!?!?!

Sunday morning Corbin came and showed me his wiggly tooth and I could not have been more surprised.  It seriously shocked me.  I was not prepared for this big milestone.  Just another sign that this little boy is growing up!

Which leads me to a question…how much does the tooth fairy pay at your house?

Randomness

We’ve been busy with church activities, barbeques, dinners, friends, family…all fun!  And of course we have the usually school and work thing too.

I took Corbin and a friend to the zoo by myself the other day.  Not having the other child’s parent with us for play dates and outings is fairly new territory.  We are just venturing into the world and it’s a great age for it to happen.

The kiddos were super fun to follow around the zoo.  They had such fun conversations to listen in on.  It was one of the most enjoyable trips I’ve had there!

Corbin set a record for being up until 10:15 pm.  He’s never done that with us (although I’ve been told this might happen at the grandparent houses) but never with us. We were over at a friend’s house for a bbq and the kids were playing so well and the adults were just chit chatting that everyone lost complete track of time.  This is when you know your kids have gotten older!  No fighting, no whining, no sharing issues….it was amazing!

Also there that night I was introduced to a free app called “dubsmash”.  It has snippets of popular songs and movie/tv lines that you record yourself reenacting.  Corbin did the song “let it go” from frozen and it was hilarious!  Check out the app yourself and have fun!

Last week we also had a chance to try out a few of Corbin’s birthday gifts.  We worked on a string art project.  It involved nails and a hammer.  That little project showed my very incompetent abilities with a hammer and the dangers of holding a nail while a 5 year old is hammering.  But regardless of some of our trials we had funSmile

Corbin also got to go to the live Wild Kratts show.  He was super excited and wanted the Kratt brother outfit, but they had sold out at the end.  So, Grandma Tammy ordered one from Amazon (because that’s what grandparents do) and it got sent to our house.  You better believe that boy had his creature power suit on in seconds.  Now, whenever he watches the show he must be in the correct gear.

We have another soccer game tomorrow, yahoo! And we are going to be spending our morning doing our first family servant event with our church.  We are requested to bring rakes, shovels, gloves, and sunscreen….this sounds like it’s going to be workWinking smile

Soccer First

Corbin not only had his birthday party Saturday, but he also had his FIRST soccer game that afternoon.

The way his age group is set up is to practice 30 minutes and then play 30 minutes the same day.  We’ve been playing a lot at home, but I wasn’t sure how it would translate when he got around kids his own age and in a new environment.

He started off a little hesitant in practice but by the time the game came this kid was ready.  Corbin surprised and delighted us all with his enthusiasm for the game.  He was aggressive, he got after the ball, and he worked with his team.

Corbin scored a few goals and he had the whole family (cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents) all cheering for him.  Basically, Corbin’s family made up half the crowd there.

I am officially a soccer mom and love it!  I had SO much fun watching Corbin play and cheering him on.  I am actually really looking forward to his next game.

They have 6 kids on each team and play 3 at a time so they rotate in and out.  Here’s Corbin in action:

It’s really exciting to watch Corbin doing something he really enjoys.  Go Corbin go!!

Roaring into 5

We celebrated Corbin’s 5th birthday this weekend with our first friend only party (Plus all of our family…which made it like 2 adults to every child that got dropped off.  Needless to say to worked out wellSmile.)

IMG_1262

I made a gluten free dinosaur cake and some nongluten free cupcakes.  The dinosaur was supposed to be red, but it turned out pink.  I just could not get it to go red and then I ran out of food coloring.  So, I showed Corbin he was ok with it and we went with it.

IMG_1241IMG_1242IMG_1245

First on the party agenda, “arts and crafts”, The kids had bags to decorate, a dinosaur sticker scene, and coloring sheets.

Then they took their bags out for a dinosaur egg hunt….

and they were off!

After that we all headed in to sing Corbin happy birthday.

IMG_1306

While the cake and ice cream were being served and set at the kid’s places at the table I read a few birthday dinosaur books.  What’s a party without books…says no one but a librarianWinking smile

Then we ate our treats and Corbin opened presents.  He had some great expressions and was really excited over every present!

IMG_1325

My favorite was his excitement over what was in the purple bag.  Can you guess what it is?

You probably should just stop guessing because I don’t think it’s a typical gift that would make a 5 year old giddy and scream in delight.

It was a digital clock for his room.  Yup, he loves to know the time and have a plan.  What can I say, he is my child.

IMG_1348IMG_1381IMG_1446IMG_1458

Finally, the party ended up with the kids running around and playing outside.  The game I had planned with balloons did not work because it was too windy, so we had a little extra free time.  But the kids did so well playing together.

IMG_1510IMG_1526IMG_1547

The kids started sitting on this little wall and it made a great picture.  Unfortunately, some of the kiddos had already left, so they aren’t all there.  In the future I’m going to try and remember this spot to get everyone in a shot.

Happy 5th birthday my little dinosaur!  We love you forever and always.

Easter

We’ve established a routine for Easter over the past few years and we really like how it allows us to see everyone but not feel overly rushed.

We started with Grandpa and Grandma Tammy on Saturday.  We ate lunch, dyed eggs, and hang out for a bit.

Checking out the Easter basket…

followed by a candy egg shooter.

Dying eggs is always a fun activity!

On Sunday we drove to Hutch and started off the morning with meeting Mom and Dad at their church for Easter service.

Then we headed to their house for a yummy lunch and an egg hunt for Corbin.

Doing a little Bible reading before church in the car.
