Cleaning Skills — He’s Got Them

This little guy is a great helper in the cleaning department!

“Oh mom…now people have expectations of my cleaning skills.  This is a disaster!  I’m too young for such pressure!”

“Uh oh…something went terribly wrong.”

“The truck is stuck in the tree.  Does this reflect poorly on my driving abilities?”

Olympics 2012

Anyone else watching the Olympics?  Ha, I know, who isn’t watching!  I do love to watch them.  I’ve stayed up far too late getting caught up in the competitions.  My favorite part is to learn about the athletes and their stories.  It’s so interesting to me to hear about their training, their families, and their challenges.

I also have delusions when I watch the Olympics.  These athletes make everything look SO easy.  I watch gymnastics and I think in my head that, with just a little practice, I too could do a double back flip with a full twist!  Or of course, with just a little training, I too could swim the 100 meter backstroke in mere seconds.  Let’s not even go into how “easy” the sand volleyball games look…all I would need is a good day of skills practice and then I too could be out there hitting the ball with ease.  Am I alone in this type of thinking? ;)

The Olympics also bring me heartache.  I feel so sad for those athletes who have spent most of their life training for moments like this and then they don’t medal or have a colossal breakdown (i.e. USA men’s gymnasts!).  I can’t even imagine the disappointment they feel.  But then I’m also inspired because so many of these athletes seem to deal with these losses in stride.  Yes, they’re upset and disappointed, but they seem ready to go back, train some more and try again.  Umm, no thanks, I think I would be packing my bags and hitting the Ben and Jerry’s!  Perhaps that’s why I’m not an Olympic athlete…among other reasons:)

We can all take a page from the athletes who handle adversity so well.  What a strong positive mental attitude they have.  Maybe I can’t compete like an Olympic athlete, but I can certainly try to think more like one…and who knows maybe one day….nope never mind I think I’ve passed the prime of ever making gold;)

Mr. Tater Head

Mr. Tater Head (as Corbin calls him) got to wear sunglasses today.  (I tried to explain, repeatedly, that those were just glasses, but Corbin was not having it.  These were Mr. Tater Head’s sunglasses.  Ok, that’s fine.  One day you might learn the difference...one day).

Then Mr. Tater Head’s mustache (or “mushroom” as Corbin calls it) had to be attached to the crane.  Of course, don’t we all know that a mustache of that magnitude is quite heavy and that it must be moved by crane?

Yup, it’s been a busy afternoon here with Mr. Tater Head his sunglasses and mushrooms…:)

Today I…

Today I sewed a button on.  I know it’s not earth shattering and for most people this would be no great feat.

For me, it was ground breaking.  I don’t sew…not even a button.  I’ve done it maybe once in my life.  Call me lucky, I just don’t have buttons fall off much.

So, this morning when a crucial button was missing on one of my favorite shirts I knew the day had come: to ask Chris if he knew how to sew a button.  And wouldn’t you know it, he didn’t.  But he gave me some advice to go onto YouTube and look for a tutorial.

Well, I was like a man asking for directions when it came to this button.  I was NOT going to YouTube to figure out how to sew on a button…pathetic.  (Although I think being over 30 and not knowing how to sew a button probably already pushes the pathetic line) But, anyway, I had some pride and I just wanted to do it myself.

I began by trying to do this procedure on my couch standing up with no light.  Umm, all mistakes.  After many minutes of unsuccessfully finding the button hole (yes I can thread a needle easily.  Thanks to my mom’s efforts of trying to get me to love cross stitch…umm no thanks!)  I finally switched my approach.  I turned on every available light, sat down, and worked at the kitchen table.

More success followed and I’m proud to announce that after X amount of minutes (I still have some dignity…I will not disclose the time it took) I successful had sewed on my button!  I instantly messaged my triumph to Chris who was not as equally excited, but still proud of my domestic achievement I’m sure;)

My day continued with another milestone.  Corbin asked to use the big potty instead of the potty chair.  Hooray!  Of course I can accommodate that request.

So I set him up there and pee came flying out onto me and the floor.  Oh no!! I’m a girl, I forget, I don’t think about what happens when boys pee sitting down.  His little potty chair has a splash guard so this never happens!

I had not put him far enough back and Corbin was horrified at the mess he made.  I told him it was my fault (because it was) and he was SO relieved.  He kept saying “that was Mommy’s fault” as I cleaned up the mess.  I hope I haven’t scarred the big potty experience for life!!

Finally, to end the day we went to the park. I always take his potty chair because I’m tired of racing back to the house. It’s inevitable that he has to potty while we are there.

As usual he had to potty while playing, so he went.  But of course he had to up the ante and go pee and poo…super!  This has never happened, so what to do.  We were almost done playing anyway, so I decided to just pack him, the potty (with the poo), and the basket of toys back in the wagon and go home.

I couldn’t carry the potty and pull the wagon so I placed it securely on top of the basket.  Only problem with that is the contents were proudly on display but I figured it was a short walk home who would be out to see?

Old people, that’s who.  Old people who like to putter in their yard.  Old people who want to stop and talk and then get closer to see your son.  Yes, those old people got a glimpse of the soiled potty chair in all its glory.  They were polite and didn’t say anything about it, I was mortified and tried to act nonchalant, and then we all went on our way trying to put the potty chair contents behind us.

I’m not even sure what to think about my day.
